Like most DC residents, we love ramen and we love burgers. The question is, can we love them together?
We journeyed to Smorgasburg in Williamsburg to find out.
There, among the many vendors, we spotted our goal: the ramen burger. Created by Keizo Shimamoto, the original ramen burger has become so popular that it’s now trademarked cronut-style. Ramen Burger restaurants are expected to open this year in New York, Los Angeles, and Honolulu.
We must admit – we were a little suspicious. We’d seen other food trends come and go (like that time they tried to make hot dogs happen in DC) and we wondered whether the ramen burger would live up to the hype.
Perhaps it was because we were one of the first ones in a constantly growing line, which meant that the ramen was still crispy and the scallions still fresh. The shoyu glaze matched perfectly with the well-seasoned beef – and the crunch of the ramen was much more preferable than the taste of a squishy bun.
Our only complaint is that they give out one napkin per order. It’s a messy treat, but it’s one you won’t soon forget.
