Navigating Fitness Classes with the DC Fit Crasher

Tired of the gym scene in DC?  There’s a solution for that.

DC has become home to an increasing number of fitness classes offered at studios and boutiques around the area, making it possible to ditch the gym and try something new almost every day.

Sound intimidating?  It’s not.  In fact, one popular DC blogger – Meaghan of DC Fit Crasher – has made it her fitness routine for the past four years.

She talked to District Style about how she does it and how you can, too!

Q: Did you ever belong to a gym here and, if so, what were your thoughts?

A: I have been a member of a “big box” gym before, and wasn’t a huge fan. While it was convenient to have a treadmill or stationary bike at my disposal whenever I wanted, I felt that the experience was impersonal and not the most motivating.

Q: What do you see as the benefits of this versus having a gym membership?

A: It has benefits and disadvantages. The benefits involve always having the opportunity to try something new, constantly challenging your body in different ways, and pushing past your comfort zones. Boutique studios also typically involve smaller class sizes, personalized attention from expert instructors, and a real sense of community. The disadvantages of building a routine around boutique classes can include higher price tags and scheduling restraints.

Q: What fitness advice do you have for DC residents who are low on time and/or money?

A: Local fitness blogs are an excellent way to weed through the good and bad of DC’s workout options. It’s always a good idea to do a little research before paying for a class. Also, DC has become a bit of a free workout mecca, with no-cost fitness events going on around the city each week. I do my best to share them on Twitter and my free workout page whenever I hear about them – check them out and follow along!

Q: What’s your view on the gym scene here?

A: DC over the past two years has seen an explosion of boutique fitness studios and gyms opening all over the city. It’s an exciting place to be for folks who like to sweat!

Q: What have been some of your favorite classes over the past year?

A: There are honestly too many to count! With so many options, I find myself finding new favorites all the time.

Q: What classes would you suggest “crashing” for DC fitness beginners?

A: That depends entirely on what your fitness goals are, but my best advice to fitness beginners is to just get out there, try something new, and have fun!
